Man Kills 4, Wounds 1 of His Children, Kills 2 Adults and Finally Surrenders: UPDATE

The sheriff’s department said precinct deputy constables were called to the house in the northern Houston suburb of Spring about 6 p.m. Wednesday and found two adults and three children dead. Another child later died at a hospital.

Killed were two boys, ages 4 and 14; two girls, ages 7 and 9; a 39-year-old man; and a 33-year-old woman, said [Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Thomas] Gilliland. The gunman and his wife are estranged, and she was out of state, Gilliland said. Two of the dead children were adopted, he said.

“These children were all their children,” he said of the suspect and his wife.

“It appears this stems from a domestic issue with a breakup in the family, from what our witness has told us,” Assistant Chief Deputy Constable Mark Herman of the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office told reporters. He did not explain further.

…Gilliland said the teenager was in “very critical condition” at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston late Wednesday night.

After the 15-year-old survivor told deputies that her father was headed to her grandparents’ home, they were able to pass along the warning, he said.

Authorities said the teen’s information also helped them intercept the suspect. The suspected gunman then led authorities on a chase, with nearly two dozen deputy constables’ patrol cars following him into a cul-de-sac shortly before 7 p.m. There, the suspect’s boxed-in vehicle remained for hours. Finally, about 10 p.m., after hours of waiting and negotiations, the man emerged from his car, raised his hands and sank to his knees as deputies placed him under arrest.

During that time, Gilliand said, there were “two hours of constant talking with a man armed with a pistol to his head and who had just killed six people.”

Gilliland described the man as in his 30s with a beard “and cool as a cucumber.” He said that when he and other officers first approached, the man was “just sitting in his car looking out at us.”

UPDATE:

Ronald Lee Haskell, 33, faces the death penalty for multiple counts of capital murder.

The heavy-set blond man was in the custody of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office following an hours-long standoff with dozens of officers, including a SWAT team and hostage negotiators, late Wednesday.

…Haskell forced his way into the home of his ex-wife’s sister in the Houston suburb of Spring by dressing as a FedEx delivery man, according to police.

He demanded to see his ex-wife, Melannie Haskell.

But when she was not present, Haskell reportedly tied up the family’s five children — two boys aged four and 13 and three girls aged seven, nine and 15 — while waiting for the parents to return home.

Once husband and wife Stephen Stay, 39, and Katie Stay, 33, returned, they were also tied up.

Haskell then shot each member of the family in the back of the head execution-style.

The 15-year-old teenager survived but was in critical condition. She managed to tell police where Haskell was headed before being airlifted to the hospital, adding the gunman intended to kill her grandparents as well.

…During the standoff, the shooter sat in his vehicle surrounded by about 50 police with their guns drawn. There were at least a dozen patrol cars waiting to pounce.

Haskell’s February divorce was difficult, according to court documents from Cache County in the southern state of Utah where he lived.

He was considered a “threat” to the couple’s children.

In 2008, Haskell was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, simple assault and committing an act of violence in front of children, according to local media.

March 9 Fatal Car Crash: Linked to Below-the-Waist Nudity, Alcohol; Husband Jailed

According to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit, [Matthew P.] Notebaert [30] was driving east on Stallion Drive at 55 mph at 12:30 a.m. The dead-end dirt road has a speed limit of 30 mph and ends at a canal. Investigators determined the car steered slightly to the right before launching over the canal, but there was no braking.

The car was airborne for 30 feet, crashing into the far bank of the canal. Neither of the Notebaerts were wearing seatbelts and both were naked from the waist down, according to the affidavit. Amanda Notebaert’s head hit the dashboard and windshield, while Matthew Notebaert’s knees were crushed by the lower part of the dashboard. She died at the scene.

An investigator at the hospital reported that Notebaert smelled strongly of alcohol and was vomiting. The investigator overheard Notebaert telling someone on a phone call that he “was not paying attention and drove down the wrong road and they wound up in a canal and killed his wife.”

A search of the crashed vehicle turned up a flask with a whisky-like liquid inside. Toxicology results showed Notebaert had a blood-alcohol level of .135 to .163 percent. The legal limit is .08 percent. Results also returned a high level of active and metabolized THC, the intoxicating ingredient in marijuana.

Notebaert was jailed Wednesday on charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and DUI property damage.

Man Stabs Wife to Death, Hugs and Kisses Daughters before Stabbing Them to Death

The bodies of Yoselin and her two daughters were found Sunday evening by a 12-year-old boy who shared the home with the family, sources and relatives said. They were undiscovered for nearly a day.

Mejia-Ramos told police he came home Saturday night after drinking beer with friends and flew into a jealous rage after seeing a photo of his wife with another man on her Facebook page and on her phone, prosecutors said.

He allegedly grabbed a knife from the butcher block in the room and stood over his wife and daughters while they slept, the complaint says.

His wife woke up and screamed, but he stabbed her — then grabbed another knife and stabbed her again after she ran away, twisting it into her side and breaking the knife, according to the complaint.

His daughter Daniela was awake, and he told police he picked her up, gave her a hug and kiss and asked for her forgiveness before putting her back on her bed and stabbing her, prosecutors said.

He also allegedly picked up his younger daughter, Yoselin, and hugged and kissed her before stabbing her to death.

“[R]eligious man” Suspected in Triple Murder-Suicide

On Wednesday, the family of four was found dead in their South Carolina home in an apparent murder-suicide at the suspected hands of the devout Jehovah Witness husband and father.

The bodies of Sheddrick Byron Miller, 38, and his wife Kia Von Miller, 28, were discovered with their two young children, age 3 and 1, in the family’s Riverwalk home after Sheddrick Miller’s mother hadn’t heard from them for a few days, the Charlotte Observer reported.

…[Tammy] Doctor called him “a religious man” who loved his kids. She said his wife was a stay-at-home mom.

…South Carolina ranks first in the nation in number of women murdered by men, according to a study released by the Violence Policy Center in October — correlating to Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Nationwide “nine women each week are shot to death by their husband or intimate partner,” Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, said in their report.

“That’s nearly 500 domestic gun violence deaths each year — more than twice the number of servicewomen killed in military conflicts since the Korean War. We urgently need better policies that protect women and their families from this senseless violence. No American, adult or child, should live in a perpetual state of fear. It’s inhumane.”

“I’m glad I did it”: Man Tries to Kill Wife and Father-in-law by Setting Trailer on Fire

Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 32-year-old Rainier-area man Saturday night after he allegedly poured gasoline on a mobile home in the 100 block of Raintree Loop while his wife and her father were inside and then set it aflame.

Joshua Ford was arrested around 11:30 p.m. while walking on 133rd Avenue in Rainier. Deputies arrested him on suspicion of first-degree arson, Thurston County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Brady said.

…Ford had kicked the door to the mobile home shut, and he knew that it was broken so that it was locked from the outside, Brady said. Ford then poured a can of gasoline over the mobile home and set it on fire, Brady added.

…Deputies had visited the residence earlier Saturday evening because of a domestic dispute, Brady said.

When deputies arrested Ford, he said “I’m glad I did it,” court papers state. During Monday’s court hearing, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jack Jones said Ford “is clearly dangerous.” He also pointed out that Ford has numerous prior convictions for disobeying court orders. Jones said that police reports indicate Ford was intoxicated when he was placed under arrest.
