World Gone Bad: Doctors in Kolkata Beat, Slash Suspected Thief to Death

Authorities have ordered an inquiry into the attack in the eastern city of Kolkata in which the 30-year-old man was beaten with bamboo sticks and slashed on Sunday, a senior police officer said.

“Preliminary inquiries have revealed that nearly a dozen junior doctors picked up the man on suspicion of stealing mobile phones,” Kolkata’s deputy police commissioner Dhrubajyoti De said.

They dragged him into a room at the state-run Nilratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital, tied him to a pillar and carried out the attack, before leaving him to die.

“Some of them even slashed him on his private parts,” De told AFP, adding that labourers working nearby alerted police to the attack.

“Police found the man lying in a pool of blood. A razor was also seized from the spot,” he said.

Canada? Gone Bad?

Really?

A little before 10 a.m. on Wednesday, police received several emergency calls reporting a gunman had opened fire at Ottawa’s National War Memorial , fatally shooting a Canadian soldier who was standing guard. The identity of the deceased soldier has not yet been released.

Witnesses told Reuters that the gunman then ran towards Parliament Hill, which is located across the street from the Memorial.

Construction worker Scott Walsh told the news service that he saw a man dressed in black with a scarf over his face running towards parliament. He added that the masked man was carrying a double barreled shotgun. He saw the assailant hijack a car and drove it to the main Parliament building.

A video released by the Globe and Mail Newspaper captured a gunfight inside the Parliament building, showing officers scrambling to take cover.

The incident comes just two days after police killed a Muslim convert in Quebec after he had hit two soldiers with his car in a parking lot near Montreal. Police say Martin Couture Rouleau fled in his car after hitting the two soldiers. He was shot by police after a car chase in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, near Montreal.

One shooting victim succumbed to injuries. He was a member of the Canadian Forces.  Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones.

Next of kin notification is underway and as such, the victim’s identification will not be released.

One male suspect has also been confirmed deceased. There is no further update on injuries at this time.

This is an ongoing joint police operation and there is no one in custody at this time.

Ottawa residents are asked to stay away from the downtown area while the investigation continues.  If you work in one of the downtown buildings, follow the instructions from the building management you are in.

A number of RCMP and Federal government buildings are also closed to the public; as is Ottawa City Hall and all Ottawa Police stations.

A sustained volley of shots was fired. Startled security personnel and political staff scrambled to take cover in the limestone alcoves as bullets flew.

In the minutes after the shooting on Parliament Hill, MPs and parliamentary staff began tweeting and telling reporters that it was Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers who shot the suspect. The tweets included:

NDP MP Craig Scott: “MPs and Hill staff owe their safety, even lives, to Sergeant at Arms Kevin Vickers who shot attacker just outside the MPs’ caucus rooms.”

Veterans Affairs Minister Julian Fantino, former head of the Ontario Provincial Police and ex-Toronto chief of police: “I am safe & profoundly grateful to Sgt at Arms Kevin Vickers & our security forces for selfless act of keeping us safe.”

Justice Minister Peter MacKay: “Thank God for Sgt at Arms Kevin Vickers & our Cdn security forces. True heroes.”

World Gone Bad: Woman Stabs Teacher to Death in Front of Children

“This morning, a mother showed up with a knife and stabbed a 34-year-old teacher in front of her students, for reasons that will be determined by the investigation,” Albi [France] prosecutor Claude Derens told AFP.

“When I arrived at the scene they were trying to revive her. She was in cardiac arrest in her classroom,” he said.

The stabbing took place as morning classes began at Albi’s Edouard Herriot primary school, which is attended by 284 students aged from three to 11.

No further details were immediately available…

A spokesman for [Education Minister Benoit] Hamon said he was on his way to the school to show his support, saying the education minister “is deeply shocked by this crime, which plunges the end of the school year into mourning.”

“This tragedy confirms there is a need to fight against violence in and around schools, to protect schools, teachers and students.”

The incident comes amid concerns in France over assaults by parents on teachers, with a study released in April saying nearly half of primary school principals had been verbally or physically abused by parents.

World Gone Bad: Pakistani Woman Gang-Raped, Strangled, Hung from Tree

Rape culture is as central to male supremacy as violence and war.

Pakistani police said Muzammil Bibi, 20, was attacked by three men in a field in the impoverished Layyah area of densely populated Punjab province.

“This is the first time in my 22 years of service in the police that I have seen such a case, where a girl was raped in this way and found hanging from a tree,” senior officer Sadaqat Ali Chohan told Reuters.

“We have heard of such cases in India but never in Pakistan. The girl’s clothes were torn. We took her down and moved her to hospital. Her body had signs of resistance. We have arrested three individuals who have confessed to the crime.”

…Police said her parents spent all night looking for her and found her body hanging the next morning.

Two teenage cousins were found hanging from a tree after being raped in the north of India in May, in the latest of a series of attacks which have triggered nationwide debate on violence against women.

World Gone Bad: Man Kills Love Triangle Rival, Eats Heart with Fork and Knife

The woman at the centre of the love triangle told police that her former lover had visited the house where she was living with her current partner and they had chatted together before he gave her money to buy liquor and she left.

When she returned she found her partner, 62-year-old Mbuyiselo Manona, had been stabbed, Van Wyk said.

Neighbours alerted by the commotion said they had peered through the house windows to see the man cutting out Manona’s heart and eating it.

“The whole situation was crazy. We were shouting at him to stop, but he did not listen,” one neighbour said.

“Even when the police got here… the guys were scared to go in. They had to call for back-up.

“You can’t really blame them — how do you go into a room with someone dripping another person’s blood out of his mouth?”

Western Cape deputy police commissioner Sharon Jephta said the motive for the murder was “definitely a love triangle”.

World Gone Bad: Inmates Use Helicopter to Escape Canadian Jail

The men escaped from a detention center Saturday night in Quebec City.

“A helicopter touched down briefly in the courtyard before taking off with the three prisoners,” Ann Mathieu, a spokeswoman for Quebec Provincial Police, told CNN

…A manhunt is under way for Yves Denis Yvon Lamontagne, 35, Denis Lefebvre, 53, and Serge Pomerleau, 49.

The first two men were arrested in a drug bust in 2010 and were awaiting trial. Police found weapons, dozens of cars and a plane during the bust, it said. There was no information provided on the third suspect.

It marks the second brazen jail escape in Canada in a little more than a year.

In March 2013, two men posing as tourists commandeered a helicopter from a Canadian tour company, ordered the pilot to fly over a detention center near Montreal, hoisted two inmates into the hovering aircraft using cables — and zipped away.

World Gone Bad: “Stay home, stay safe”: Man Shoots 5 Officers, Kills 3, Still At-Large

Residents were told to lock themselves up inside their homes in Moncton, the province’s largest city as police searched for the alleged shooter, 24-year-old Justin Bourque, who was described as armed and dangerous.

“Stay home, stay safe. If you cannot get home, seek out a friend or family and remain there until you are advised otherwise,” Moncton Mayor LeBlanc said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police told residents to stay inside and barricade their doors.

The RCMP police released a photo of the suspect dressed in military fatigues and carrying two firearms. He was said to be hiding in a wooded area north of Moncton.

It was those guns that he confronted police with in a street in Moncton Wednesday night around 7:30 pm (0130 GMT), killing three officers and wounding two.

…The exact circumstances of the shooting were not clear. Local media said the shooter opened fire in cold blood in a residential area of the city.

…Canada prides itself on being largely free of the gun violence that regularly plagues cities in the neighboring United States.

Provincial premier David Alward said, “I was shocked and saddened to learn of tonight’s tragic situation in Moncton.”

“On behalf of all New Brunswickers, I would like to extend my thoughts and prayers to those affected,” he added.

“Justin Bourque was arrested by RCMP at 12:10 in Moncton. He is in police custody. Residents of north Moncton can now leave their homes,” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said on Twitter.

Residents could finally emerge after having barricaded their doors while police combed a wooded neighbourhood with dogs, armored vehicles and aircraft for over 30 hours.

…Witnesses said Bourque, wearing military fatigues and carrying a hunting rifle and automatic rifle, had opened fire on police officers Wednesday on a Moncton street.

It was the worst tragedy to hit the Royal Canadian Mounted Police since 2005, when four of its agents were killed in Alberta in the west.
