Man Kills 8—6 Are Children

Investigators said [David] Conley [48] admitted to breaking into the home through an open window after the woman he formerly lived with, Valerie Jackson, 40, changed the locks on the doors.

Conley told investigators that he restrained eight people inside with metal handcuffs, including Jackson and shot them in the back of the head.

The identities of the victims were released in a press conference Sunday afternoon. They include, Valerie Jackson, her husband Dwayne Jackson, 50, Dwayne Jackson, Jr., 10, Nathaniel Jackson, 13, Honesty Jackson, 11, Caleb Jackson, 9, Trinity Jackson, 7, and Jonah Jackson, 6.

HCSO Spokesman Thomas Gilliland said when deputies arrived, no one responded at the front door. They then received more information that indicated a man in the home was wanted on a warrant.

The sergeant on the scene called for a High Risk Operations Unit, similar to SWAT, to help make entry and investigate. While the call was being placed, deputies surrounded the home, and they spotted the body of a juvenile through a window.

At that point, the sergeant and three deputies forced their way in, and Conley began shooting, the sheriff’s office says. Deputies pulled back and waited for the HROU and a negotiator to arrive.

Authorities established contact with the Conley, and after more than an hour he came outside and surrendered without further incident.

The bodies of eight people were found in the home, Gilliland said.

After Beltway 8 Police Chase, Man Shot Dead Live on TV

The pursuit began at about 10:40am Wednesday when the driver of a blue Chrysler 300 fled during a traffic stop. Authorities say police tried to pull over the driver for “suspicious activity,” including unsafe lane changes.

After several minutes of a high speed pursuit, during which the driver eluded police by going around patrol cars and even driving into the grass, the chase came to a crashing halt. The suspect slammed into a small white car at the intersection of Wallisville and Castlegory, then spun into another vehicle.

That’s when the suspect, identified as Frank Ernest Shepherd, III, got out of the car, but as he reached back inside the vehicle, officers opened fire, fatally striking him. Police say 10 to 12 shots were fired.

The end of the pursuit unfolded quickly, with only a matter of seconds elapsing between the time the suspect struck the white car and the time officers opened fire. HPD spokesperson John Cannon says two of the officers involved in the chase have been on the force for six years. He identified them as R Gonzales and L Engle. He didn’t elaborate on the nature of their involvement. It’s not yet known if they were wearing body cameras. [emphasis added]

Man Kills 4, Wounds 1 of His Children, Kills 2 Adults and Finally Surrenders: UPDATE

The sheriff’s department said precinct deputy constables were called to the house in the northern Houston suburb of Spring about 6 p.m. Wednesday and found two adults and three children dead. Another child later died at a hospital.

Killed were two boys, ages 4 and 14; two girls, ages 7 and 9; a 39-year-old man; and a 33-year-old woman, said [Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Thomas] Gilliland. The gunman and his wife are estranged, and she was out of state, Gilliland said. Two of the dead children were adopted, he said.

“These children were all their children,” he said of the suspect and his wife.

“It appears this stems from a domestic issue with a breakup in the family, from what our witness has told us,” Assistant Chief Deputy Constable Mark Herman of the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office told reporters. He did not explain further.

…Gilliland said the teenager was in “very critical condition” at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston late Wednesday night.

After the 15-year-old survivor told deputies that her father was headed to her grandparents’ home, they were able to pass along the warning, he said.

Authorities said the teen’s information also helped them intercept the suspect. The suspected gunman then led authorities on a chase, with nearly two dozen deputy constables’ patrol cars following him into a cul-de-sac shortly before 7 p.m. There, the suspect’s boxed-in vehicle remained for hours. Finally, about 10 p.m., after hours of waiting and negotiations, the man emerged from his car, raised his hands and sank to his knees as deputies placed him under arrest.

During that time, Gilliand said, there were “two hours of constant talking with a man armed with a pistol to his head and who had just killed six people.”

Gilliland described the man as in his 30s with a beard “and cool as a cucumber.” He said that when he and other officers first approached, the man was “just sitting in his car looking out at us.”

UPDATE:

Ronald Lee Haskell, 33, faces the death penalty for multiple counts of capital murder.

The heavy-set blond man was in the custody of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office following an hours-long standoff with dozens of officers, including a SWAT team and hostage negotiators, late Wednesday.

…Haskell forced his way into the home of his ex-wife’s sister in the Houston suburb of Spring by dressing as a FedEx delivery man, according to police.

He demanded to see his ex-wife, Melannie Haskell.

But when she was not present, Haskell reportedly tied up the family’s five children — two boys aged four and 13 and three girls aged seven, nine and 15 — while waiting for the parents to return home.

Once husband and wife Stephen Stay, 39, and Katie Stay, 33, returned, they were also tied up.

Haskell then shot each member of the family in the back of the head execution-style.

The 15-year-old teenager survived but was in critical condition. She managed to tell police where Haskell was headed before being airlifted to the hospital, adding the gunman intended to kill her grandparents as well.

…During the standoff, the shooter sat in his vehicle surrounded by about 50 police with their guns drawn. There were at least a dozen patrol cars waiting to pounce.

Haskell’s February divorce was difficult, according to court documents from Cache County in the southern state of Utah where he lived.

He was considered a “threat” to the couple’s children.

In 2008, Haskell was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, simple assault and committing an act of violence in front of children, according to local media.

Who in Las Vegas Married A 41-Year Old to a 16-Year Old?

A Houston-area actor and drama teacher is accused of having a sexual relationship with his 16-year-old student and then marrying her in Las Vegas.

Spring Valley Police said the girl’s mother attended the wedding.

According to police, the girl’s mother didn’t complain about the relationship because she was worried it could affect her daughter’s future acting career

Police said 41-year-old Ilich Auyapah Guardiola has been bringing the girl back to his apartment to have sex.

Neighbors at the Glens Apartments on Pech Road told KHOU they often saw the two coming and going.

“We really didn’t know they were in a relationship. It looked more like a father daughter sort of thing,” said neighbor Teresa Edwards.

Investigators said Guardiola has two addresses less than a half mile apart. However, detectives believe he only brought the girl to the apartment on Pech Road.

Police said the two traveled to Las Vegas to get married just two weeks before his arrest.

Guardiola is in the Harris County Jail on $50,000 bond and has been charged with sexual assault of a child. [emphasis added]

Argument Leads to Shooting Leads to Driving into Bystanders

There were some tense moments in a Houston, Texas neighborhood Wednesday when a car plowed through a crowd gathered at a murder scene.

Investigators say it all began as a dispute between neighbors and then it quickly escalated out of control.

That dispute led to a fatal shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

Then while the investigation was underway, the driver of a silver sedan suddenly plowed through the crowd of onlookers.

The car clipped at least one person.

Officials say the driver of the car is believed to be the father of the alleged murder suspect.

The suspect is still on the loose.

Woman Kills Child with Punch to Stomach

Elisena Carmona, who is accused of killing her boyfriend’s 4-year-old daughter Lillian Fortner, was arrested Wednesday. On Tuesday, the couple brought the girl to the North West Medical Center emergency room, but the girl was dead before doctors could treat her.

“I can’t tell you or my dad will get mad”: Father Beats Son over School Behavior Report

According to police, a teacher saw scratches and bruises all over the 12-year-old’s face and head and asked the boy what happened. The child allegedly replied “I can’t tell you or my dad will get mad.”

That is when the teacher took the injured boy to the nurse’s office so they could investigate further. When asked again, the child opened up and told the nurse his dad beat him after he got a bad behavior report from school.

The boy said Newman first took a wrench and busted up his Nintendo DS game system. He threw shards of game pieces at the boy, hitting him in the back of the head. It did not end there, police said.

Newman then dragged his son into the kitchen and threw him down on the floor. He placed his knee in the boy’s chest, pinning him, then pounded him in the face and head while spewing profanities, documents state. The boy’s cheeks were bruised and his face was swollen.

The child was taken to Texas Children’s Pediatric Medical Hospital for evaluation. Doctors found the boy had numerous hematomas and contusions upon the right and left side of the face, as well as bruising on the right shoulder and back. It was determined he suffered blunt head trauma, according to court documents

Attorney Barricades Self in Condo Bldg, Dies in Shootout with Police

And his daughter was in the apartment.

The Dallas County Medical Examiners Office identified the suspect as 47-year-old Michael Edward Schmidt. NBC 5’s Ray Villeda confirmed Schmidt is an attorney that is part of a law firm in Uptown Dallas, near the shooting scene. …

Police said the incident began after the resident talked to an employee of the building.

”He reported to the employee that his apartment was being burglarized,” said Deputy Chief Gil Garza of the Dallas Police Department.

After that employee called for police, Schmidt reportedly moved to a hallway adjacent to the condominium’s lobby and began barricading himself inside.

When officers arrived, they spoke to the employee and were informed of the Schmidt’s location and that he was armed.

“According to the employee, the individual shot at officers when officers tried to speak with him. The officers then retreated into cover.” Garza said.

Witnesses said Schmidt continued to intermittently fire shots while officers spoke to him from cover. A witness that heard the situation unfold from across the street said he believed the gunman fired a half-dozen shots at police during the shootout.

Garza said that Schmidt moved from his barricaded position and went toward the officers at some point during the incident. Police said it was at this time that the officers returned fire, striking and killing the man. Schmidt was pronounced dead at the scene.

The witness that spoke to NBC 5 said he believes officers fired back more than a dozen times, killing the man. Police did not confirm how many shots were fired by officers.

Dallas police confirm Schmidt’s 11-year-old daughter was inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. She was located uninjured after the shooting and was released to the custody of relatives.

… The windows of the lobby were blown out by gunfire during the shooting and the witness told NBC 5’s Kendra Lyn he could see a body near the front doors of the lobby following the shooting.

Police said no officers were injured in the incident.
