Exorcism Gone Wrong: Mother and Accomplice Kill 2 Children, Wound 2

This afternoon, detectives arrested Monifa Denise Sanford, age 21, of the 19000 block of Cherry Bend Drive in Germantown after she was released from the hospital.

Sanford has been charged with two counts of First Degree Murder and two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder. She is being held without bond.

…Taniya Harris, age 5, and Martello Harris, age 8, remain hospitalized.

Investigators have learned that the two defendants believed that they were performing an exorcism.

Police charged Zakieya Latrice Avery, 28, of Germantown, with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. She is currently being held without bond.

The deceased children are identified as Norell N. Harris, 1, and Zyana Z. Harris, 2. The other two children are still hospitalized. They are identified as Taniya Harris, 5, and Martello Harris, 8.

Police were called to the 19000 block of Cherry Bend Drive Friday morning and discovered the victims. Avery attempted to run from officers, but was apprehended quickly.

…A neighbor called 911 on Friday saying he saw a blue car with its door open and the knife on the sidewalk outside the house. Police who responded to the scene saw a blue car with its door open. The keys were in the ignition and there was blood in the car.

Police also found a knife on the sidewalk outside. Police believe the red-handled knife may be one of the weapons used in the attack.

Officers had to force their way into the home and found the victims inside in a “very bloody” crime scene. The children were found in the bedrooms and may have been asleep at the time of the attack.

Man Killed, 2 Wounded in Drive-by on Mardi Gras Blvd.

The drive-by shooting, which happened just before 7 p.m. at the intersection of Mardi Gras Boulevard and Copernicus Street, killed the 31-year-old driver of a Buick. His passengers, a 30-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl, were injured in the shooting, police said.

The victim’s name is being withheld until his family members can be notified, police said.

…Witnesses told police that a silver late-model vehicle drove up alongside the Buick and someone inside opened fire, then sped away. The Buick, riddled with bullet holes, crashed into a telephone pole in front of the old Crescent City Connection toll tags office, causing the airbags to deploy. Traces of blood were visible on the car doors and airbags. Police recovered more than two dozen bullet casings from the scene.

Woman Tries to Beat Ex’s 8-Year-Old Son to Death

Prince George’s County police said Tuesday that 26-year-old Helen Marie Newsome broke into the home in Landover over the weekend. After hiding for more than 12 hours until the boy’s father went to work Saturday morning, police say Newsome covered the boy’s head with a pillow and beat him with a dumbbell weight. But the boy fought back and managed to escape to a neighbor’s home.

Newsome jumped out a window, but police say she was arrested nearby.

The boy’s father had recently broken up with Newsome. She is charged with first-degree attempted murder.

Mother Tries to Kill 9-Year-Old Daughter with Hedge Trimmers

Maureen Mullin, 39, is charged with attempted murder, mayhem, assault and battery on a child with injury, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, Westwood police said. The child’s father was able to stop the attack, according to police.

Police said they received a domestic disturbance call to the family’s Pond Street home at 4:50 a.m. and discovered the mother and daughter with serious injuries. Police and Westwood Fire officials treated the pair, and Mullin and the girl were taken to undisclosed hospitals.

“The injuries were serious but very luckily are non-life-threatening,” Police Chief Jeffrey Silva said.

Seven-Year-Old Girl Survives Attempted Murder-Suicide

Police say Ava Sangavaram suffered several stab wounds Thursday when her mother, podiatrist Victoria Vovchik, tuned on her at their upscale New City home.

They say Vovchik, 45, then stabbed herself to death.

Police aren’t saying whether a motive has been detected. They say no note was found.

Police say the victims were discovered by Ava’s father, Kristappa Sangavaram. He is a doctor from New Jersey. The school had alerted him that Ava was absent.

CBS New York reports that police say the father is not considered a suspect in the incident.

Police are not aware of any previous domestic or mental health issues, the station says. The incident remains under investigation.

Father Shoots 11-Year-Old Daughter in Face

She’s alive.

Investigators said 27-year-old Byaer Johnson apparently entered the home to visit his young daughter. At point, they say, he was asked to leave, then picked up his handgun and shot his daughter in the face.

The girl was rushed to Cooper University Hospital where she is listed in critical but stable condition, according to CBS Philly. Authorities said the girl could suffer paralysis as a result of her injuries.

Investigators say that after allegedly shooting his daughter, Johnson pointed the gun at a 28-year-old man in the home and pulled the trigger, but the weapon jammed. The man reportedly wrestled with Johnson, obtained his gun and then fired it at him, hitting Johnson in the buttocks.

Man Kills in Gert Town, Drives to Slidell and Kills Again

Smith was booked Tuesday in New Orleans with one count of second-degree murder in the death of Joshua Walker [in Gert Town], who was slain early Sunday. Smith appeared in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court on Wednesday morning, and his bail was set at $500,000.

Meanwhile, the Slidell Police Department says Smith is the lead suspect in the killing of 21-year-old Warren Pryor [son of Smith’s father’s girlfriend], who was found dead Monday night. Slidell Police Department Chief Randy Smith said his investigators interviewed Michael Smith on Tuesday but are still working to determine a motive behind Pryor’s murder.

Young Father Tries to Kill Newborn Son with Rum

The victim was born with Down syndrome and several holes in his heart, according to the report. The child was at the hospital because of breathing difficulties and had been admitted Oct. 16.

Fortunato said doctors discovered the child’s blood-alcohol content of 0.289 after he had a seizure Sunday.

A level of 0.08 percent is considered presumptive evidence of drunken driving. For those younger than 21, a reading of 0.02 percent is presumptive evidence of drunken driving.

The amount found in the baby’s blood suggests that 28 percent of his blood had been replaced by alcohol.

Six-Year Old: “Mommy Tried to Kill Me”

The critically injured little girl told officers, “Mommy tried to kill me.”

Now, her mother, 30-year-old Tasha D. Harmon, is in a Wisconsin jail on charges of attempted homicide, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.

Court documents released Friday regarding Monday’s incident reveal that the Fitchburg woman told police, “I went crazy, tried to kill my daughter and myself.”

Mother Drowns, Strangles Toddlers, Poisons 4-Year-Old, Slashes Own Wrists—And Survives

The children’s mother, 41-year-old Stacey Smalls, attempted to commit suicide by slitting her own wrists, police said. She’s currently hospitalized at Frankford and being questioned by investigators.

A 4-year-old girl was transported to St. Christopher’s Hospital.

“We have a 4-year-old child who was given some kind of substance to drink or swallow. She’s at the hospital being evaluated right now,” said Lt. Raymond Evers, Philadelphia Police.
