attempted murder

Canada? Gone Bad?

Really?

A little before 10 a.m. on Wednesday, police received several emergency calls reporting a gunman had opened fire at Ottawa’s National War Memorial , fatally shooting a Canadian soldier who was standing guard. The identity of the deceased soldier has not yet been released.

Witnesses told Reuters that the gunman then ran towards Parliament Hill, which is located across the street from the Memorial.

Construction worker Scott Walsh told the news service that he saw a man dressed in black with a scarf over his face running towards parliament. He added that the masked man was carrying a double barreled shotgun. He saw the assailant hijack a car and drove it to the main Parliament building.

A video released by the Globe and Mail Newspaper captured a gunfight inside the Parliament building, showing officers scrambling to take cover.

The incident comes just two days after police killed a Muslim convert in Quebec after he had hit two soldiers with his car in a parking lot near Montreal. Police say Martin Couture Rouleau fled in his car after hitting the two soldiers. He was shot by police after a car chase in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, near Montreal.

Man Shoots, Stabs 3-Year Old to Death, Dies in Police Shootout

Frederick Roy Miller, 38, allegedly shot and wounded the girl’s maternal grandfather and great-grandmother on Saturday while attempting to kidnap his daughter.

Police responded and spotted Miller grabbing his daughter and getting into his Nissan Altima, according to police. Officers chased Miller in his car, and he stopped several times to exchange gunfire with police.

Five Prince George’s county police officers and one Maryland state trooper fired shots at Miller, who was killed at the scene.

When police approached the vehicle, they discovered the 3-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound and a stab wound.

The office of the Chief Medical Examiner said it appeared Miller stabbed and shot his daughter. She was taken to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Man Stabs Aunt, Kills Her 6-Month Old, Shot Dead by Police

A six-month old baby died and his mother was in critical condition after a family member stabbed them both on Thursday in a Sacramento suburb, police said.

The 20-year-old alleged assailant, the woman’s nephew, was shot by police and also died, Folsom police spokesman Andrew Bates said.

“The first officer to arrive contacted a male in his early 20′s who was covered in blood and advanced on the officer,” Bates said. “The suspect had just stabbed his aunt and her 6-month old son.”

“If you are going to kill me then go ahead”: Man Tries to Murder Woman over 3 Cookies

When Allen M. Hall’s 49-year-old female roommate ate three Chips Ahoy cookies, that apparently sent him into a frenzy, which almost resulted in her death.

When Hall, 23, threatened to kill his roommate when he discovered she ate the cookies for breakfast, at first she thought he was joking.

But after repeating the threats Hall attacked her, said an affidavit by Decatur patrol officer Joseph Kish.

The incident occurred about 10:15 a.m. Wednesday in a house on the 400 block of East Garfield Avenue, where Hall and the roommate had separate bedrooms.

The victim said she was dressing in a bathroom when Hall started pounding on the door, threatening to kill her.

Because she didn’t take the threat seriously she opened the door and told him: “If you are going to kill me then go ahead,” the victim later told police.

Hall shocked her with his violent response.

“Allen grabbed her around the throat with both of his hands and threw her down into the tub,” she told police, said the affidavit. “She hit the back of her head on the tub and this caused a knot on her head.”

Hall then got on top of her “and strangled her to the point she could not speak and was having difficulty breathing.”

The victim’s husband and landlady both arrived on the scene and “had to pull Allen off of her.”

She later told police she believed “Allen would have killed her if (her husband and landlady) had not been there.”

The landlady told police she was in the dining room when she heard “commotion coming from the bathroom.” When she arrived on the scene, Hall was on top of her in the tub, with his hands around her neck “and appeared to be squeezing as hard as he could.”

When the landlady yelled for him to stop, he did not relent, so she grabbed one of his arms. Then she and the victim’s husband pulled Hall off of her.

“If she had not been there she believed Allen would have killed (the victim),” the landlady told police.

During a police interview, Hall explained, “(The victim) told him to kill her, so he charged.”

Man Kills 4, Wounds 1 of His Children, Kills 2 Adults and Finally Surrenders: UPDATE

The sheriff’s department said precinct deputy constables were called to the house in the northern Houston suburb of Spring about 6 p.m. Wednesday and found two adults and three children dead. Another child later died at a hospital.

Killed were two boys, ages 4 and 14; two girls, ages 7 and 9; a 39-year-old man; and a 33-year-old woman, said [Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Thomas] Gilliland. The gunman and his wife are estranged, and she was out of state, Gilliland said. Two of the dead children were adopted, he said.

“These children were all their children,” he said of the suspect and his wife.

“It appears this stems from a domestic issue with a breakup in the family, from what our witness has told us,” Assistant Chief Deputy Constable Mark Herman of the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office told reporters. He did not explain further.

…Gilliland said the teenager was in “very critical condition” at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston late Wednesday night.

After the 15-year-old survivor told deputies that her father was headed to her grandparents’ home, they were able to pass along the warning, he said.

Authorities said the teen’s information also helped them intercept the suspect. The suspected gunman then led authorities on a chase, with nearly two dozen deputy constables’ patrol cars following him into a cul-de-sac shortly before 7 p.m. There, the suspect’s boxed-in vehicle remained for hours. Finally, about 10 p.m., after hours of waiting and negotiations, the man emerged from his car, raised his hands and sank to his knees as deputies placed him under arrest.

During that time, Gilliand said, there were “two hours of constant talking with a man armed with a pistol to his head and who had just killed six people.”

Gilliland described the man as in his 30s with a beard “and cool as a cucumber.” He said that when he and other officers first approached, the man was “just sitting in his car looking out at us.”

UPDATE:

Ronald Lee Haskell, 33, faces the death penalty for multiple counts of capital murder.

The heavy-set blond man was in the custody of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office following an hours-long standoff with dozens of officers, including a SWAT team and hostage negotiators, late Wednesday.

…Haskell forced his way into the home of his ex-wife’s sister in the Houston suburb of Spring by dressing as a FedEx delivery man, according to police.

He demanded to see his ex-wife, Melannie Haskell.

But when she was not present, Haskell reportedly tied up the family’s five children — two boys aged four and 13 and three girls aged seven, nine and 15 — while waiting for the parents to return home.

Once husband and wife Stephen Stay, 39, and Katie Stay, 33, returned, they were also tied up.

Haskell then shot each member of the family in the back of the head execution-style.

The 15-year-old teenager survived but was in critical condition. She managed to tell police where Haskell was headed before being airlifted to the hospital, adding the gunman intended to kill her grandparents as well.

…During the standoff, the shooter sat in his vehicle surrounded by about 50 police with their guns drawn. There were at least a dozen patrol cars waiting to pounce.

Haskell’s February divorce was difficult, according to court documents from Cache County in the southern state of Utah where he lived.

He was considered a “threat” to the couple’s children.

In 2008, Haskell was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, simple assault and committing an act of violence in front of children, according to local media.

LA Mother of 6 Throws Toddler out Moving Car to Get “Reaction” from Babydaddy

The Franklin Parish Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Franklin Medical Center in Winnsboro around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, June 22, to investigate the incident. They were called to the ER when staff noticed a 20-month-old child suffered injuries that were reported as severe in nature.

On arriving, deputies with the Sheriff’s Office began interviewing the child’s mother and quickly became alarmed about the facts of the case.

The mother of the child, who has been identified as 23-year-old Lasasha Allen of Winnsboro, was brought to the Sheriff’s Office where further investigation revealed the true intent of the injuries.

…According to Sheriff’s investigators, Allen had made contact with the father of the child on Saturday, June 21, and had told the father that the child had fallen out of a car window while riding in the Monroe area and had been injured. The intent, according to [Franklin Parish] Sheriff [Kevin] Cobb, was to get a reaction from the father.

“The next day when she got no repsonse, she made the determination to make this come true,” he said.

Cobb stated that when that attempt failed, on the following day, Sunday, June 22, Allen staged an event in which she placed the 20-month old in the passenger seat, accompanied by another 7-year-old child who was placed in the back seat, and drove to a rural location with an extremely curved roadway.

According to the investigation, Allen then drove at a speed of up to 45 miles an hour, reached over and opened the door and intentionally causing the younger child to be shoved out.

According to the report, Allen stated that her intent was to inflict minor damage so that she would not be caught in a lie with the child’s father. She then waited for a period of time and took the injured child to the Medical Center.

…Cobb said that the injuries suffered by the child were very serious and the child was airlifted to a Shreveport medical facility for treatment. He stated that according to information received today from the medical facility the child is in stable condition pending surgery.

…In addition to the injured child, Cobb said she has five other children who have been placed in the custody of Child Services.

World Gone Bad: “Stay home, stay safe”: Man Shoots 5 Officers, Kills 3, Still At-Large

Residents were told to lock themselves up inside their homes in Moncton, the province’s largest city as police searched for the alleged shooter, 24-year-old Justin Bourque, who was described as armed and dangerous.

“Stay home, stay safe. If you cannot get home, seek out a friend or family and remain there until you are advised otherwise,” Moncton Mayor LeBlanc said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police told residents to stay inside and barricade their doors.

The RCMP police released a photo of the suspect dressed in military fatigues and carrying two firearms. He was said to be hiding in a wooded area north of Moncton.

It was those guns that he confronted police with in a street in Moncton Wednesday night around 7:30 pm (0130 GMT), killing three officers and wounding two.

…The exact circumstances of the shooting were not clear. Local media said the shooter opened fire in cold blood in a residential area of the city.

…Canada prides itself on being largely free of the gun violence that regularly plagues cities in the neighboring United States.

Provincial premier David Alward said, “I was shocked and saddened to learn of tonight’s tragic situation in Moncton.”

“On behalf of all New Brunswickers, I would like to extend my thoughts and prayers to those affected,” he added.

Inspired by Sermon, Woman Drowns Toddler, Poisons 10-Year Old

Kimberly Dawn Lucas was arrested and is being held at Palm Beach County Jail after she allegedly tried to poison both children Monday afternoon and allegedly drowned the girl in the bathtub.

Lucas and her longtime partner had raised the boy and girl since their birth.

On Wednesday, details emerged about a note left by Lucas that references a sermon she heard at Metropolitan Community Church on Sunday, the day before the death of the little girl.

According to the police report, police found a computer left on in the home where the murder of 2-year-old Elliana and the attempted murder of 10-year-old Ethan took place, with a message for whoever found it.

“In YOUR WORDS “WHEN YOU ARE LAYING IN BED AT NIGHT REMEMBER YOU FUCKING DID THIS TO YOURSELF!” the note says. “Lea’s sermon really, really touched me yesterday but God never told me to stop.
“Hell is what we (go) through on Earth. Enjoyed your life with possiblego out without us, he manage but give you finally what you what want because apparently over the past 20 years I was not able to. Love you Always Kimberly.”

…Police say the note left behind references the sermon given by Metropolitan Community Church Pastor Dr. Lea Brown.

“Her sermon covered Genesis 22, in which God asks Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac,” the police report says. “But at the last minute, God stops him from doing so.”

Dr. Brown confirmed to police that Lucas and Ethan had attended the church service the Sunday before the tragedy and also confirmed giving a sermon on Genesis 22.

“It’s what I was called to do,” Brown told CBS12. “There’s no way anyone could have predicted this.”

Teen Beats, Strangles, Drags Girlfriend over “snarky remarks to things he was saying”

Her condition has been upgraded.

Michael Hutton is accused of creating serious internal damage to Connaway’s brain. Connaway’s Grandfather, Jerry Strickland, said she needed brain surgery after the assault.

Connaway was in critical condition, but has since been upgraded to fair as of Wednesday.

“Hannah opened her eyes today and was hoarsely talking to Sunny and I,” Claudene Williams, friend of Connaway and witness of the assault said. She was “telling us she loves and that she is happy to see us. She seems a bit confused but is flashing us bright smiles. The left side of her body is still not moving like the doctors would like, but it will get there hopefully.”

Michael Hutton, 18, has been charged with attempted first degree murder after being accused of severely beating his girlfriend Friday night. Hutton was in court Tuesday and according to District Attorney Ben David, the teen is accused of beating 17-year-old Hannah Connaway in her head and neck.

According to the assistant district attorney, the incident happened at Hutton’s parent’s house while they were out of town. The ADA said Connaway and Hutton got into a fight over some texts. Connaway’s friend, Claudene Williams, said she was with the couple at the time of the altercation. She said Hutton was angry because of some tangled fishing lines.

“He was angry because he couldn’t untangle fishing lines,” explained Williams. “He was blaming her (Hannah) for some things like having snarky remarks to things he was saying, and then it just escalated and kept on going.”

The fight reportedly took place inside and outside of the house before ending in the front yard. Williams said Hutton had beaten, strangled, and dragged Connaway across the yard.

“I keep on hearing her screaming and I keep on hearing all the sounds and it’s just awful. I ran around the front door. I tried to get in. All the doors were locked. It was just awful,” Williams said.

At his court case Tuesday, Hutton was charged with attempted murder and is facing life without parole. He was taken back into custody immediately following the hearing.

He is also facing close to 30 years for felony assault by strangulation and first degree kidnapping, felony assault to inflict serious injury, misdemeanor assault on a female, and a misdemeanor drug charge.

Montgomery Register was one onlooker in the courtroom Tuesday. Register said she used to date Michael Hutton.

“There’s a lot that went on in the five and a half years that we did date,” said Register.

“He’s not a good guy. I’ve forgiven him. I’ve forgiven him. Like I said, I’m a Christian 100 percent. I have no grudge against him or his family, but I feel for the people he put after me after I left, after I walked away.”
