child murder

Man Kills 4, Wounds 1 of His Children, Kills 2 Adults and Finally Surrenders: UPDATE

The sheriff’s department said precinct deputy constables were called to the house in the northern Houston suburb of Spring about 6 p.m. Wednesday and found two adults and three children dead. Another child later died at a hospital.

Killed were two boys, ages 4 and 14; two girls, ages 7 and 9; a 39-year-old man; and a 33-year-old woman, said [Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Thomas] Gilliland. The gunman and his wife are estranged, and she was out of state, Gilliland said. Two of the dead children were adopted, he said.

“These children were all their children,” he said of the suspect and his wife.

“It appears this stems from a domestic issue with a breakup in the family, from what our witness has told us,” Assistant Chief Deputy Constable Mark Herman of the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office told reporters. He did not explain further.

…Gilliland said the teenager was in “very critical condition” at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston late Wednesday night.

After the 15-year-old survivor told deputies that her father was headed to her grandparents’ home, they were able to pass along the warning, he said.

Authorities said the teen’s information also helped them intercept the suspect. The suspected gunman then led authorities on a chase, with nearly two dozen deputy constables’ patrol cars following him into a cul-de-sac shortly before 7 p.m. There, the suspect’s boxed-in vehicle remained for hours. Finally, about 10 p.m., after hours of waiting and negotiations, the man emerged from his car, raised his hands and sank to his knees as deputies placed him under arrest.

During that time, Gilliand said, there were “two hours of constant talking with a man armed with a pistol to his head and who had just killed six people.”

Gilliland described the man as in his 30s with a beard “and cool as a cucumber.” He said that when he and other officers first approached, the man was “just sitting in his car looking out at us.”

UPDATE:

Ronald Lee Haskell, 33, faces the death penalty for multiple counts of capital murder.

The heavy-set blond man was in the custody of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office following an hours-long standoff with dozens of officers, including a SWAT team and hostage negotiators, late Wednesday.

…Haskell forced his way into the home of his ex-wife’s sister in the Houston suburb of Spring by dressing as a FedEx delivery man, according to police.

He demanded to see his ex-wife, Melannie Haskell.

But when she was not present, Haskell reportedly tied up the family’s five children — two boys aged four and 13 and three girls aged seven, nine and 15 — while waiting for the parents to return home.

Once husband and wife Stephen Stay, 39, and Katie Stay, 33, returned, they were also tied up.

Haskell then shot each member of the family in the back of the head execution-style.

The 15-year-old teenager survived but was in critical condition. She managed to tell police where Haskell was headed before being airlifted to the hospital, adding the gunman intended to kill her grandparents as well.

…During the standoff, the shooter sat in his vehicle surrounded by about 50 police with their guns drawn. There were at least a dozen patrol cars waiting to pounce.

Haskell’s February divorce was difficult, according to court documents from Cache County in the southern state of Utah where he lived.

He was considered a “threat” to the couple’s children.

In 2008, Haskell was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, simple assault and committing an act of violence in front of children, according to local media.

“This is everyday USA behind me”: Man Guns down 3 Daughters, Wife, Kills Himself

Neighbors in San Carlos Park didn’t hear the gunshots. It might have been hours or maybe days before anyone realized what had happened, if not for the 911 call about 2:25 a.m. from a Spanish-speaking man inside the home. By the time Lee County deputies arrived to the home at 17372 Phlox Drive, the 36-year-old man, his two daughters, their older sister and their 29-year-old mother were dead.

Lee Sheriff Mike Scott described the killings as murder-suicide, saying the father had left a note.

…The Sheriff’s Office would not release the names of the victims Sunday, saying the killings were part of an active investigation and there were relatives who still needed to be notified. Two family members identified the victims Sunday evening as Maria Antonia Navas, 29; Sonny Enrique “Quique” Medina, 36; Allison Navas, 10; Sophia Medina-Navas, 6; and Mia Medina-Navas, 2.

Scott said what happened Sunday was the single-largest mass killing he could recall in county history. The sheriff said there were no prior indications of trouble at the home, no history of reported domestic violence or child abuse. This, he said, was a “safe, nice home” with photographs and drawings on the refrigerator and toys scattered throughout.

“This is everyday USA behind me,” Scott said Sunday as he stood in front of the family’s home. “Something snapped, something went terribly wrong. And we’ll never know the answer to why.”

Inspired by Sermon, Woman Drowns Toddler, Poisons 10-Year Old

Kimberly Dawn Lucas was arrested and is being held at Palm Beach County Jail after she allegedly tried to poison both children Monday afternoon and allegedly drowned the girl in the bathtub.

Lucas and her longtime partner had raised the boy and girl since their birth.

On Wednesday, details emerged about a note left by Lucas that references a sermon she heard at Metropolitan Community Church on Sunday, the day before the death of the little girl.

According to the police report, police found a computer left on in the home where the murder of 2-year-old Elliana and the attempted murder of 10-year-old Ethan took place, with a message for whoever found it.

“In YOUR WORDS “WHEN YOU ARE LAYING IN BED AT NIGHT REMEMBER YOU FUCKING DID THIS TO YOURSELF!” the note says. “Lea’s sermon really, really touched me yesterday but God never told me to stop.
“Hell is what we (go) through on Earth. Enjoyed your life with possiblego out without us, he manage but give you finally what you what want because apparently over the past 20 years I was not able to. Love you Always Kimberly.”

…Police say the note left behind references the sermon given by Metropolitan Community Church Pastor Dr. Lea Brown.

“Her sermon covered Genesis 22, in which God asks Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac,” the police report says. “But at the last minute, God stops him from doing so.”

Dr. Brown confirmed to police that Lucas and Ethan had attended the church service the Sunday before the tragedy and also confirmed giving a sermon on Genesis 22.

“It’s what I was called to do,” Brown told CBS12. “There’s no way anyone could have predicted this.”

24-Year-Old Man Smothers 1-Year-Old Son So He Can Keep Playing Xbox

Sheriff’s officials said rescuers were sent to [Cody Eugene] Wygant’s home Thursday morning because of a report of a child not breathing, The boy, Daymeon Wygant, was taken to Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead.

In an interview with detectives, Wygant [24] admitted that he suffocated his son because the boy was crying, preventing him from playing online Xbox games. Wygant placed his hand over the boy’s mouth for at least three minutes, then put him in a playpen and covered him with several layers of bedding, sheriff’s officials said.

Wygant played video games for more than an hour, then watched three episodes of the television show Fringe. He didn’t check on the boy for about five hours. When he did, the boy was unresponsive.

“[M]entally prepared” 14-Year Old Shoots Father, Hacks Brother 30 Times with Machete

Detectives say the teen charged with killing his father and brother in Coeur d’Alene told them he had “mentally prepared himself” for the alleged double homicide for eight months.

Eldon Samuel III, 14, was charged as an adult Tuesday in Kootenai County court. He faces two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his father, Eldon G. Samuel, Jr., 46, and his younger brother, Jonathan Samuel, 13. Bail was set at $1 million.

Police records show the boy called in the report himself at 9:09 p.m. Monday and told the police dispatcher that he had shot and killed his brother and father.

…The report states that Samuel said his father, who “often beats him,” had been taking medication on Monday evening while “talking about zombies.” Samuel’s father allegedly fired a shot outside the home before going back into the house. Samuel told investigators that the two then began fighting inside the house, and after his father pushed him twice, he fired at the man’s stomach with a .45 caliber handgun.

Samuel told the investigator that he shot his father three more times, twice in the cheek and once in the “brain.” Still, he said, his father wasn’t dead.

According to the report, the father then attempted to crawl to Jonathan’s room. The 13-year-old boy, who Samuel allegedly said “he hated,” was hiding under a bed and refused to come out when Samuel ordered him out of the room. Samuel told investigators he then used a shotgun to shoot his hiding brother four times.

Samuel said he then set the weapon aside, picked up a “large knife” and stabbed Jonathan “numerous times.” Samuel told the detective that Jonathan still appeared to be alive after the stabbing, which prompted him to use a machete to strike Jonathan approximately 30 times.

The report said that Samuel briefly spoke to the detective about the popular video game “Grand Theft Auto V,” stating that out of the three character choices the game gives players, he always chooses “Trevor” – a character who “has anger issues and often shoots other characters in the game.”

“Eldon thinks Trevor is ‘kinda cool,'” the report states.

…Sgt. Christie Wood said in a press release that the Samuel family had recently relocated to Coeur d’Alene from California. The home on First Street where they were staying is owned by St. Vincent de Paul of North Idaho and used as an emergency shelter.

Jeff Conroy, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul North Idaho, told The Press Tuesday that the family moved into the house approximately three months ago and were in the process of moving out.

Woman Kills Child with Punch to Stomach

Elisena Carmona, who is accused of killing her boyfriend’s 4-year-old daughter Lillian Fortner, was arrested Wednesday. On Tuesday, the couple brought the girl to the North West Medical Center emergency room, but the girl was dead before doctors could treat her.

Carmona told doctors that Lillian had fallen and hit her head a few days earlier.

The autopsy revealed Lillian died from a puncture in her small intestine, caused by blunt force trauma to the abdomen. Police said Carmona later confessed that she got frustrated with Lillian and punched her in the stomach.
