Man Shoots 13-Year Old 9 Times for Laughing at Him

According to the Gary Post-Tribune, police have not released the shooter’s name, but said that he shot Kobe Jones, 13, nine times. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:31 p.m. on Friday by the Lake County Coroner’s office.

Gary Police Lt. Thomas Pawlak told the Post-Tribune that the gunman’s home was broken into and robbed some time on Friday afternoon. The man arrived home around 5:00 p.m. and discovered the robbery and flew into a rage.

As he was having a noisy tantrum in his back yard, a crowd of neighborhood residents gathered. Jones made the mistake of laughing at his neighbor’s histrionics, which drove the man to even greater heights of rage.

He produced a gun and shot Jones nine times, killing him. The shooter and his girlfriend fled the scene in a car, but returned at around 7:00 p.m. and surrendered to police.

A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed Friday evening in Gary by a neighbor who was upset about his house being burglarized and became enraged when the teen laughed at him, according to police.

Kobe Jones died of multiple gunshot wounds near his home in the 1000 block of Polk Street and was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:31 p.m., the Lake County coroner’s office reported.

A suspect is in custody and the residents on the block who know the connection aren’t talking.

“We know there were a lot of people out there when he was ranting and raving, but no one wants to tell us what they saw,” a frustrated investigations Cmdr. Del Stout said Saturday.

Without eyewitnesses who can connect the suspect to the shooting death of Jones, the boy’s 30-year-old neighbor may go free.

“He started then, up and down the street, knocking on doors and wanting to know who broke into his home,” Nielsen said. This continued on and off until shortly before 5 p.m., when Jones, who was sitting on his own front porch, was shot several times.

The suspect and his girlfriend were seen leaving the area immediately. They returned about two hours later, after police had completed processing the scene in front of Jones’ house.

They were both arrested then, Nielsen said. The shooting suspect told police he had just been released from Kane County Jail the day he discovered the burglary. His girlfriend had been at work during the day, police said.

Man Shoots up Safe and Sound Senior Citizen Social Club

Gunshot victims shouted to police, “Help us! He’s reloading!” as officers attempted to enter the Safe and Sound Senior Citizen Social Club where four men were wounded late Wednesday night, police said.

… A reserve officer used his shotgun to shatter a lock on the door, allowing officers inside the club. The suspect, a 23-year-old Chicago man, was found hiding in a bathroom at the rear of the club and arrested.

…The wounded victims, none of whom suffered life-threatening injuries, according to police, are a 65-year-old of Gary, who was shot in both feet and right shin; a 76-year-old of Gary, struck in the chest and buttocks; a 43-year-old of East Chicago, shot in the left wrist and upper leg, and a 45-year-old of Chicago, shot in the right arm and buttocks, the police report states.

The building that houses Safe and Sound was the former home of the Sin City Desciples motorcycle club. The social clubs operating in the area are often settings for gambling and other vices. Police occasionally raid clubs when they receive reports of increased activity, loitering and other problems.

Safe and Sound was raided by Indiana State Excise police in October 2011 for serving alcohol without a license. In that raid, 13 people ranging in age from 50 to 87 years old who were inside the club were charged.
