Man Guns Down Woman in Front of Cop for Laughing at Him

The boy, who also was shot and remained hospitalized, told investigators that his mother joked and laughed when she noticed one of the passengers in a Cadillac that ended up following her had his feet hanging out the window, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Dave Coleman said.

“This is what the little boy is saying,” Coleman said. “Mommy says, ‘Look at that, isn’t that funny?’ and they made eye contact. She drove on and they began following her.”

The gunman, identified as Robert Washington, 38, of Rialto, and two other men in the car — Brandon Armolav White, 19, and Stanley Ross White, 24 — had no connection “whatsoever” to Berry, Coleman said.

The attack occurred about 12:40 p.m. Wednesday as Berry drove with her son along Rosecrans Avenue. The patrolman was monitoring traffic near Kornblum Avenue when Berry pulled up to him in her gray Mercedes-Benz and said she was being followed. The officer told the frightened woman to park in front of him and he would investigate.

Berry pulled over and was backing up to park, nearly hitting the officer’s bumper, when a 1994 Cadillac drove up next to her car and stopped.

Before Berry could get out and before the officer could unfasten his seat belt, Washington jumped out and started shooting at the woman and her son. The officer quickly got out of his patrol car and killed the gunman, Coleman said.

The wounded boy ran from the car to safety. His name was not released.

Washington was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies said he was carrying two guns.
