“This is everyday USA behind me”: Man Guns down 3 Daughters, Wife, Kills Himself

Neighbors in San Carlos Park didn’t hear the gunshots. It might have been hours or maybe days before anyone realized what had happened, if not for the 911 call about 2:25 a.m. from a Spanish-speaking man inside the home. By the time Lee County deputies arrived to the home at 17372 Phlox Drive, the 36-year-old man, his two daughters, their older sister and their 29-year-old mother were dead.

Lee Sheriff Mike Scott described the killings as murder-suicide, saying the father had left a note.

…The Sheriff’s Office would not release the names of the victims Sunday, saying the killings were part of an active investigation and there were relatives who still needed to be notified. Two family members identified the victims Sunday evening as Maria Antonia Navas, 29; Sonny Enrique “Quique” Medina, 36; Allison Navas, 10; Sophia Medina-Navas, 6; and Mia Medina-Navas, 2.

Scott said what happened Sunday was the single-largest mass killing he could recall in county history. The sheriff said there were no prior indications of trouble at the home, no history of reported domestic violence or child abuse. This, he said, was a “safe, nice home” with photographs and drawings on the refrigerator and toys scattered throughout.

“This is everyday USA behind me,” Scott said Sunday as he stood in front of the family’s home. “Something snapped, something went terribly wrong. And we’ll never know the answer to why.”

Police said the 28-year-old man grabbed a handgun after getting into a dispute with his girlfriend.

“Basically, he went from room to room and killed everyone,” said Pomona police Lt. Mike Keltner.

Police received a call at 10:52 p.m. Thursday from a relative of the alleged shooter.

“The suspect told a family member that he was going to hurt himself and everyone else in the house,” said Pomona police Lt. Ronald McDonald.

When police arrived at the home in the 2100 block of Ramsey Way, they found the bodies of the 28-year-old alleged shooter, his 25-year-old girlfriend, as well as his girlfriend’s 52-year-old mother and 17-year-old brother.

They have not been officially identified, but friends and relatives identified the 52-year-old woman as Manuela “Nelli” Padilla and her 17-year-old son as Juan “Johnny” Padilla. The shooter’s girlfriend was Mariana Padilla, her sister April Mejia said. Mejia said the shooter’s name was Raul, but she was unsure of his last name.

…Mejia also said she didn’t know much about her sister’s boyfriend, but said he was in love with her sister. Her sister did mention once that she wanted to leave him.

“I wouldn’t think he would do anything like this,” she said.
