Man in Pickup Intentionally Hits and Kills Trooper

A pickup truck driver changed lanes and intentionally hit a trooper conducting a traffic stop along a highway on Thursday, killing him instantly, and was charged with murder, police said.

Almond Upton admitted to police that he deliberately swerved his pickup truck from the left passing lane to the right shoulder to hit Trooper Christopher Skinner on Interstate 81 near Binghamton around noon, police Superintendent Joseph A. D’Amico said. Upton, of Melrose, Florida, had sideswiped two other vehicles with his 2014 Toyota Tacoma, D’Amico said.

Upton was taken into custody an hour later after a police dog tracked him into nearby woods, where he was found naked. Police said he didn’t appear to be drunk or on drugs.

D’Amico said it was unclear what the motive was for striking the trooper. He said Upton, 60, told police he was driving to Connecticut to visit his mother.

March 9 Fatal Car Crash: Linked to Below-the-Waist Nudity, Alcohol; Husband Jailed

According to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit, [Matthew P.] Notebaert [30] was driving east on Stallion Drive at 55 mph at 12:30 a.m. The dead-end dirt road has a speed limit of 30 mph and ends at a canal. Investigators determined the car steered slightly to the right before launching over the canal, but there was no braking.

The car was airborne for 30 feet, crashing into the far bank of the canal. Neither of the Notebaerts were wearing seatbelts and both were naked from the waist down, according to the affidavit. Amanda Notebaert’s head hit the dashboard and windshield, while Matthew Notebaert’s knees were crushed by the lower part of the dashboard. She died at the scene.

An investigator at the hospital reported that Notebaert smelled strongly of alcohol and was vomiting. The investigator overheard Notebaert telling someone on a phone call that he “was not paying attention and drove down the wrong road and they wound up in a canal and killed his wife.”

A search of the crashed vehicle turned up a flask with a whisky-like liquid inside. Toxicology results showed Notebaert had a blood-alcohol level of .135 to .163 percent. The legal limit is .08 percent. Results also returned a high level of active and metabolized THC, the intoxicating ingredient in marijuana.

Notebaert was jailed Wednesday on charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and DUI property damage.

Man in Black Dodge Kills 1, Injures 11 at Venice Beach

The driver fled the scene and about an hour later, just as police were circulating word that they were seeking a black Dodge with a driver in his 20s, a man walked into a police station in neighboring Santa Monica, told officers he was involved in the boardwalk incident, Neiman said.

Police then found a car nearby that they believe belonged to the man, Neiman said.

Hours later detectives were questioning the man, calling him a person of interest and attempting to determine whether he was the driver, Neiman said.

… According to the security video and witness accounts, the man with a baseball cap, gray shirt and white pants parked next to the Cadillac Hotel, twice walking out to the boardwalk before getting into the Dodge Avenger and accelerating, swerving around yellow poles meant to prevent cars from getting into the pedestrian-only area and onto the boardwalk.

… The man knocked over two mannequins then started hitting people, swerving from side to side and often running straight into them.

The crowd of hundreds of couples, families and children who had been sitting at cafes, shopping and walking lazily along in shorts and sandals were sent on a mad scramble to get themselves and others out of the way and to rush to help those who were hit.

The car hit at least three vendors who were sitting at their sales booths, video showed.

It hit two women who appeared to be in their 60s, Hagan said.

Many ran after the car, screaming and cursing as it sped away, he said.

New Orleans Police are searching for the driver of a white 2012 or 2013 Porsche Panamera that fled eastbound towards Slidell on Interstate 10 following a fatal hit-and-run accident on the high rise bridge that killed an off-duty New Orleans Police Department officer.

“We now believe the vehicle involved in this fatality is a white … Porsche (Panamera) with extensive front right side damage, including a missing front light kit, as well as a missing side view mirror,” said Officer Frank Robertson III.

Robertson said the officer was involved in an accident on the high rise, and was struck when he exited his vehicle to check the status of the other motorist, at about 1 a.m. Sunday.

Witnesses said a white car was driving erratically when it hit the officer, knocking him to the pavement. The officer was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Less than 40 minutes after the off-duty officer was struck – suspects Kenneth Halley and another man met Bill Cager at Cager’s auto and body shop, ironically just a block or so from NOPD headquarters.

…Once at the shop, documents say that surveillance video caught the three men as they went about wiping blood stains off the vehicle. However, they apparently didn’t dispose of the evidence very well as the documents said blood-stained rags were found in the garbage at the shop.

…According to court records, Thomas was in his uniform and wearing a reflective vest directing traffic after an accident on the highrise. When Thomas saw a white Porsche Panamera driving at a high-rate of speed, he attempted to flag down the vehicle. The Porsche struck Thomas’ truck, before hitting the officer and continuing with him on the hood of the car. After Thomas fell off the vehicle’s hood, the vehicle sped away.

…Around 3:30 p.m. Monday, McKey, 25, went to the NOPD Traffic Division with his attorney, according to court records. McKey told police that he was driving the Porsche, but added that it was dark and he didn’t see Thomas.

Between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Tuesday, police arrested McKey and two others.

McKey, 25, was arrested for hit and run causing death or serious injury and manslaughter. His bond was set at $50,000.

The auto shop owner, Bill Cager, 34, was booked with obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact to manslaughter. His bond was set at $100,000 – $50,000 for each count.
